W124 - Making Rhino a little more comfortable with a new head unit, speakers and electric antenna

Executive Summary:

Making Rhino more comfortable by replacing the head unit, installing an electric antenna, and replacing the dashboard speakers.

Details:

23 Nov 2020, As soon as I got Rhino back from the body works, I took it to have the audio worked on, from the previous works, I wanted to have the electric antenna refitted. The audio also needs some work as at the moment, only one side of the speaker is working and a bunch of other cables needed to be cleaned up.

The setup was intended to be simple to allow me to have some music when I drive and nothing sophisticated. To begin with, the head unit was replaced with the Alpine CDA 9887 head unit that I had purchased before. The speakers in the dash were also replaced with cheap Blaupunkt speakers, an electric antenna was fitted and lastly, I replaced a bulb in the trunk to allow the rear to be illuminated properly.

This is a very basic tweak to make the drive more comfortable while keeping the cost low.

Head unit that was installed

Speakers mounted into the speaker ports on the dashboard

Electric antenna installed when the radio or engine is off

The electric antenna erected when the radio is on

Trunk light replaced to LED from Osram (41mm Festoon)
