W124 - Fuel pump, fuel filter, trunk lid rubber, power window lifter and door lock actuator replaced
Executive Summary:
Replacement of fuel pump, fuel tank, rear trunk rubber, FR door lock actuator, and RL power window lifter
Details:
5 Dec 2020, I visited the mechanic to get a few items replaced. It was previously diagnosed that the fuel pump is faulty. He told me that the fuel pump was very hot during regular operation and it should not be. Apart from that, I had difficulties in starting the car on a cold start. The idling was also not stable. I opted to replace the fuel filter along as the previous one was contaminated with stale fuel from the replacement tank fitted into Rhino. I also took the opportunity to replace the fuel pump hanger rubber, as this would reduce the labor at a later part. The fuel hoses were replaced as well as they are old. It looks like the fuel pump has never been replaced since the car was new and I replaced it with the original one.
A week ago, I noticed that the trunk was wet after the rain, after checking, a leak was found. I spoke to Mohan to understand why the leak was there and he suggested that it was due to the trunk rubber seal that was worn out and will not seal the gap to the new trunk lid properly. A replacement rubber was ordered and fitted.
I also started to notice that the door lock was leaking air. From what I have gathered, if this is not fixed, it will lead to the vacuum pump overworking and eventually failing. After checking, it was found that the door lock actuator was leaking and needs to be replaced. An original replacement part was ordered and duly fitted.
Lastly, while working on the door card, I asked the mechanic to check on the power window as it looked like it was struggling. Upon checking, and one hard jerk later, the lifter snapped and needed a replacement. The part was ordered and installed.
After all the work was done, the car ran a lot smoother, it is interesting to see how a fuel pump could do wonders to the car. The mechanic reminded me to be gentle with the accelerator as the new pump is very responsive and he is not wrong. A simple tap on it in neutral pushes the engine straight over 4000 rpm to the limiters.
Drive home didn't change much but I could tell that the engine idles a lot smoother now.
